Mark 10:17-30
The man’s name in the Gospel is not mentioned. He can be any of us who meets Jesus on the road of life and who is struck by the beauty of his teaching and the leadership Jesus exudes. We all had had our moments of religious fervor when we wanted to be a priest or a religious or when we wanted to be a caring companion of the elderly, the sick, the lonely and the helpless. We felt good at such moments for we felt the intensity of the Lord’s presence and appeal.

The man felt he was a good man. He is basically a good guy, “I have kept all these commandments ever since…” His wealth may actually have protected him from sin. Like him, we too at times try to tell God we are good. We present evidence to prove our goodness. We tell Him that we do not forget to pray every day, that we go to Mass every Sunday, that we are honest in our work, that we obey the commandments, that our family life is solid. But the Lord could ask us, however, is this enough? Maybe we keep our hands clean, but are they helping hands? Maybe we are good providers to our family, but do we nourish a Christian spirit in our home? Maybe we honor our parents, but do we practice the virtues they taught us?
