Reading II: Revelation 5:11-14
Gospel: John 21:1-19

The apostles went back at their original place of calling, as fishermen. It gives the impression that they felt more the pain than the joy of being Christian. The reason why they went back to their fishing boats is not mentioned. Was it a disappointment? Was it because they felt more competent in catching fish than people? It seems they were not yet convinced that they had to go out and preach the good news to the whole world. They were still too much preoccupied with the bad news of Jesus’ death. It happens to us too that we want to give up when we have a bad day at work, when a project into which we put so much of ourselves is collapsing, or when we are accused of malicious intentions. We want to quit our job because we do not feel the support of our co-workers, or the boss does not appreciate our efforts and notices only shortcomings. The gospel reminds us in such moments to look for the Lord, for He is with us to bring about the unexpected.
