Faith, Knowledge, and Divine Truth

John 13:31-33a, 34-35

The gospel this Sunday begins with a beautiful statement, “Whoever loves me will keep my word and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.” In order for us to keep God’s word, we first have to know it. It is not an easy task. Knowledge is the first step to keeping God’s word, but it is by far not enough, for we can hide it in a box like a jewel which we do not wear for fear of losing it. We need correct knowledge, otherwise, we treasure something which may turn out to be a fake jewel.

As Christians, we have to be open to all knowledge, from the Bible, from science, from history or from psychology. They all help us to discover the full meaning of our life and God’s love for us. In reading the Bible, we also make sure we get the true message. Religion and science are close friends, not enemies. There can be no contradiction between scientific truth and religious truth, for both originate from God. Einstein said, “Science without religion is crippled, religion without science is blind.”
