Lord, Teach Us to Pray

Luke 11:1-13

The disciples must have seen our Lord praying several times and the experience must have driven them to request Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” The example of Jesus invited the disciples to imitate Him. It made the disciples aware how much they still must learn to be one with Him. We too have so much to learn to pray effectively, because there are moments when we pray where we feel empty at times, so frustrated about ourselves while praying.

The Lord taught his disciples what is popularly known as, “The Lord’s Prayer.” It is a good summary of the Christian life as it puts together important elements in praying. The first point that Jesus seems to stress is that we should know to whom we are praying. Jesus directed us to His Father who is full of care and love for us. He instructed his disciples the need to praise and worship God, to pray for our daily needs, to forgive one another, and to pray for protection. It is a good beginning especially for disciples following our Lord. We go to Him in the fullest trust that God is a loving Father. Jesus assures us that our prayer can be free from any insecurity for we deal with somebody who is extremely well-disposed to us.
