Jesus sends his disciples away in the boat while He goes by himself alone to pray. They were out on the open, and the boat was being tossed by the waves because the wind was against it. At dawn Jesus comes to them walking on water. When they saw Him, they were terrified, but Jesus tells them, “Courage, do not be afraid. It’s me!” Peter asks Jesus, “Command me to come to you” and Jesus says, “Come.”
Things went well for Peter, but it did not last. He walked on the water; he could do it! But when he saw the violence of the storm and his own inadequacy, the fear returned, and he started sinking. He looked at himself and at his impossible situation instead of relying on Jesus’ word. As soon as he began to sink, he cried out, “Lord save me!” He was saved. The whole crisis came about because of a lack of faith. He should never have doubted it. In our life journey, the focus of our gaze must always be Jesus especially when problems and the storms of life come.
