Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I: Jonah 3:1-5, 10
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9
Reading II: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31
Gospel: Mark 1:14-20
When Jesus called his first disciples, Peter and Andrew, James and John, they left everything and followed him. The gospel does not express any wavering, apprehension or insecurity on the part of the disciples. They believed in Jesus and followed him. They did not worry that Jesus was taking anything away from them. They must have felt that Jesus had something more to offer.
Every individual person has a special call from God to a task which is not entrusted to anybody else. As Christians we have answered the call of Jesus. As long as the trust in Him is vibrant, there is no need to fear. It demands the commitment of his whole person. St Theresa of Calcutta and so many others who have responded to Jesus’ call do not worry about what will happen to themselves for they have discovered somebody greater than themselves. Judas lost trust in Jesus, and it cost him his life by his own hand. He could see only failure, not the promise of a new and better life with Jesus.
