A Taste of Real Life

Reading I: Amos 7:12-15
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 85:9-10, 11-12, 13-14
Reading II: Ephesians 1:3-14
Gospel: Mark 6:7-13

The disciples had been with the Lord for quite some time. They have been witnesses to Jesus’ ministry. Some of them, His inner circle of friends, Peter, James and John, have been with Him in his quiet moments of prayer. The disciples had seen great signs making them hopeful for a successful mission. They had also seen Jesus’ helplessness before his townmates due to their lack of faith. Jesus did not hide to the twelve apostles the reality of Christian ministry.

The Gospel tells us how Jesus gave them an opportunity to test their readiness as witnesses to the coming of God’s kingdom. He gave them the training and the means to succeed. When God gives us a task, He will be there with his help. Jesus was still with them to guide them, to curb their over-confidence and to support them in the hour of discouragement. Before they could be on their own, they needed a taste of real life. It is important that we see a task, or a mission entrusted to us as coming from our Lord. Then it will be accepted with the right motivation and disposition. But if it is our ambition or our desire for power or money that makes us want the position, then it is not a mission entrusted to us by the Lord and will not help in building the kingdom.
