Jesus chose Peter’s boat, and he gave the order to put out a short distance. He sat down and taught the crowd. Jesus was in command, but he identified himself with Peter’s boat and preached from it. The Gospel of St Luke stresses the role of Peter in the story. When the disciples look for leadership, they have to look for the boat of Peter, which is the symbol of the church. Jesus still teaches us today through the authority of the church, but he is always the one we have to listen to. If we want to hear the voice of Jesus, we have to go to the church of Peter. Any teaching of the church will always to be in line with what Jesus taught, no matter how modern the issue may be.
When Peter allowed Jesus into his boat and gave Him permission to direct him on where to lower the nets for a catch, Peter had the most tremendous catch of fish he ever had in his entire fishing life. The miracle made Peter drop to his knees. He understood the sign and the person who had worked on it. He called Jesus’ “Lord” for he had recognized who Jesus was and who he was. He would still have to grow a lot in his faith.
