Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher.” Jesus is our teacher, and he is indeed infinitely superior to us. Yet, He promises that with full training, we can become like him. He showed his faithfulness by dying on the cross. In the history of the church many martyrs have been faithful disciples. Some have even undergone more pain than Jesus.
Any good teacher dreams of having students who surpass her learning, and it is her joy to point to a number of her former students who did. The teacher takes pride in seeing them excel in their studies. One teacher said, she respects her students, for one day, one of them could be the Mayor, Governor, President, Bishop or even her son or daughter-in-law. As Christians, we remain learners. Good teachers, doctors or lawyers keep studying to maintain their competency. A Christian needs to remain a learner too at the feet of Jesus. Life keeps offering new challenges. Only faithful praying and listening to God’s word, especially in the Gospels, make us good disciples.
