We are all familiar with the idea of the Holy Trinity. We were baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Whenever we make the sign of the cross, we express our faith in the Trinity. We believe that we are accepted in a special relationship with God, that we are adopted in an eternal love. The Son leads us to the Father, and we are filled with their Spirit. We are aware of this, not through human reasoning, but through our discipleship with Jesus who always turned to his Father and sent us his Spirit on Pentecost. We do not understand God’s inner workings, but we discover his love for us in his creative and redemptive work and in his promise of life without end. We may not understand how an airplane stays up in the air, but we are not afraid to fly. We may not understand how radio works, but we listen to it. We do not understand the Trinity, but we share in its life as revealed by Jesus. We cannot explain the love of our parents, but we have no doubt about its reality and its impact on our lives. The idea of the Trinity revealed God as a God of love, for in love there is always a partner, there are relationships.
