PASTOR’S REFLECTION: 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Matthew 9:36—10:8

There is so much fear in our hearts today. We worry a lot. We worry about calamities happening around the world. We worry about what we will have for lunch and how we will settle our bills on payday. We worry about the beginning of classes for the kids. We worry about retirement and getting old. We worry about getting sick. We worry about misunderstandings with a neighbor. We worry about the petty theft of killings. Parents worry about their children who are not at home at the regular time. We worry a lot and we have become a nation of worriers.

We need to tell our teenagers that there is much good, concealed in them that will be exposed. It is a special concern of parents to bring this about by appreciating their good qualities, by showing joy over every success they meet, by making them believe in their own abilities and helping them grow in self-confidence. Their selfimage is built up slowly by the positive reactions they get. If on the other hand we constantly nag and criticize them for every little mistake, they believe that they are no good, and what is beautiful in their lives will remain concealed.
